I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I kept seeing Jeffrey’s book pop up in ads on Facebook and in “also bought’s” on Amazon, and I noticed he was friends with other authors I follow and read for. So I reached out to him and expressed my interest in reading one of his books to review for my blog site. He was on board immediately and gave me this one because I wanted to start at the beginning of a series, even though he probably could have benefited more from having me read a new release. I got two pages in and decided I needed to read this with my son and with the recent lockdown it became the perfect daily activity. As soon as we finished today he expressed how much he wanted to read book two! Those who grew up reading Harry Potter know the content and the material grew up as the readers of the series did. Book 1 of Runes is closer to the last two books of Harry Potter for content and a little more mature than the scorers stone. With a school of magic at it’s center Harry fans will be right at home but a recommended age level might be closer to those familiar with Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart. There are definitely statements on classsim as there is a magical base caste system in place. Instead of a magic hat, natural abilities to use magic are discovered at a young age, while someone looks in your head, and decides if you are chosen or unchosen. If you are chosen you are given a rune on your forehead marking you with your specific ability to use magic. If not your forehead remains bare and your future is now extremely limited and you are forever a second rate citizen. The main character of this story Brock is unchosen and wants more out of his life and decides to take his fate into his own hands. To find out more you will have to read the story for yourself because I don’t want to spoil one bit of awesomeness!
